April 2020 Book Review
ALL the SPOILERS below!! Consider yourself warned.
Star Wars Legends, Republic Commando, Hard Contact by Karen Traviss
This book is the first in a series that was rec'd to me ages ago by a friend, but I only recently found all five books available as a set from Kindle. Now, I trust this friend to know my tastes in fiction, so I took the leap and spent the $40 to buy the set.
I am VERY PLEASED with my purchase!!
No, no... let me slump here for a moment in relief of FINALLY reading a good book? This was like reading good fanfiction but with OCs, and I honestly can't think of a better compliment. I'd have liked to get to know the troopers a little more than we did, but the story itself, the events, were told well, and what we did learn of them was good enough for the span of the story. It has left me wanting more in the good way, and hey! I've got four more books to go!
I don't really know what to say about this beyond... it was good! I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it, and I do rec it. This is early Clone Wars era stuff, so if you're into it, def give this book a read.
Star Wars Legends, Republic Commando, Triple Zero by Karen Traviss
Ok, yeah, the first book was definitely the set-up. I'm 30% into this second book, and... it's so much better. We've expanded our cast just a bit and expanded on others from the first book. This is a year later, our Troopers have lost their green and are more hardened soldiers now. Our Jedi is finding herself more already, and I like her, though I'm still more interested in the Troopers.
A third of the way in, and I'm going to rec this book to you, though I'll be back to say more once I'm done with it. -LD 4-23-2020
Yup, good shit.
Spoilerz of course, but OMG, the Jedi gal got STUPID. Oh, the Force said... No! Look, no, little girl, wtf are you thinking taking ZERO precautions against pregnancy with the LITERAL SLAVE you're bangin' when you're in the middle of a war, he has NO rights, and your own Order will eject you, leaving you with nothing and no resources and a baby to raise? Oh but look how bright the Force is around it! NO, you fucking moron. I'm not going to argue the consent a MAN who's been fighting a war for a year can give to HAVING sex, but did he KNOW that women can get pregnant? Does he know that HE could help accomplish that event? Now, this issue of her being pregnant, choosing not to tell Darman, and the idiocy of it all was addressed, so I do not blame the author for the character's actions. It IS in line with the character, but omg, I want to shake Etain so fucking hard.
What threw my suspension of disbelief is the idea of the Force being able to shorten a human pregnancy from 9 to 5 months. I mean, ok, it can make crops grow faster and better, but nearly halving the development of a PERSON? And this on top of the fact that Clones, of which this child's father is one, is artificially aging twice as fast as they should. But that's wrong. But to hide the child's existence... *squints*
I mean, though, that's my only complaint. LOL!
In the grand scheme of things, it's a minor complaint, but it did throw me out of the story, so I had to mention it.
I definitely liked getting to know the characters more, and while I do like them all, I still want to shake the shit out of the Jedi. I think we're MEANT to though.
Good news! I have three more books to go of this! Eeeeeeee!!
Star Wars Legends, Republic Commando, True Colors and Order 66 by Karen Traviss
I'm reviewing these together because I sort of went from True Colors to Order 66 without a breath, and now I don't actually remember which specific events were in which book. LOL! Traviss keeps up her standard of GREAT tension and awesome combat/fight scene writing.
I'm most hung up on the ending of Order 66 of course. I mean, we ALL know what happened there, but the movies and cartoon made it seem compulsory. This book was not like that, and I liked it better. It made it so Palpatine issued the order, and the clones CHOSE to follow it. The could CHOOSE not to as well without the mental fight I saw in the cartoon with... Was it Rex or Cody? --I forget, but either way, I liked this.
I saw Etain's death coming MILES away. I really do mean MILES away. I'm pretty sure I decided, at latest, about half way through True Colors that she was definitely gonna die. This didn't bother me because I just didn't really feel an attachment to her. I think the author did a GREAT job writing a PERSON, and I don't think Etain is a bad one at all. It's just out of ALL our characters we've been introduced to, she's the one who's death I saw coming WAY in advance, and who was my least favorite. I guess I'm glad it was her and not someone else. I'd have been heartbroken to lose Ordo or Mereel or Kal'buir, or even Besany.
That said. FUCKING KUDOS to Traviss for making me mourn for the characters left behind by Etain's death. I was FINE with her dying, and had that just been accepted or glossed over, or... I don't know, not given the weight it was by her SHOWING all these others brokenhearted by her loss, I wouldn't probably have given it a second thought. But no, we've got Kal SOBBING in a pantry over Etain's death. We've got her Force sensitive infant aware and giving her his favorite toy on her pyre. Her death TOUCHES these characters, and I mourned FOR THEM if nothing else. Goddman brilliant writing, madame, thank you!
Ahhhh! Gais... just... go buy yourselves these books, they're so worth it.
I do have ONE MORE left, and according to the same friend who rec'd them, there was supposed to be a 6th, but along came Herr Disney and stomped on that plan. I feel like Order 66 was a good end, even if it's NOT the end, and I'm almost hesitant to read 501st in case it leaves me hanging even more than I am now.
I mean... I'm going to read it. LOL! I bought it, and it'll be good regardless, I have no doubt. BUT, it's currently 10:24pm on April 30th, so I'm sure not going to finish it before I need to post this review anyway, so it's a good place here to press pause, and brace myself for Dar, Niner, Boss, Scorch, and Fixer being stuck in the Imperial army. Sev's not dead 'til someone shows me a body, so I'd likely read 501st just to see how they find him (ALIVE DAMNIT!) ^_^
So... yeah. I only planned to read one book from my actual bookcase this month, and instead I bought 5 new ones (ebooks tho) and read four. LOL! Oh well. They were so good, I can't regret it even the tiniest bit.
Hope you're all safe out there! Thanks for reading!
